Even while living abroad, some US expats are required to file a State Tax Return.
Whether or not you are required to file a State Tax Return depend on the last state you resided in and your ongoing association with that state.

Do you need to file a state tax return?
In order to accurately identify your obligations as a state tax filer, you would have to speak directly to one of our enrolled agents. Here is some general guidance in identifying whether you need to file:
- If you last resided in or maintain residency in California, New Mexico, Not Carolina or Virginia, you are likely to be required to file a State Tax Return.
- It is unlikely that you will have to file a State Tax Return if you last resided in Alaska, Florida, Nevada, South Dakota, Texas, Washington or Wyoming.
- For the majority of other states, it depends on your personal circumstance.
