STATE TAX RETURN FOR US EXPATS

Even while living abroad, some US expats are required to file a State Tax Return.

Whether or not you are required to file a State Tax Return depend on the last state you resided in and your ongoing association with that state.

Our US enrolled agents can support you through your state tax return.

Do you need to file a state tax return?

In order to accurately identify your obligations as a state tax filer, you would have to speak directly to one of our enrolled agents. Here is some general guidance in identifying whether you need to file:

  • If you last resided in or maintain residency in California, New Mexico, Not Carolina or Virginia, you are likely to be required to file a State Tax Return.
  • It is unlikely that you will have to file a State Tax Return if you last resided in Alaska, Florida, Nevada, South Dakota, Texas, Washington or Wyoming.
  • For the majority of other states, it depends on your personal circumstance.
