Following on from yesterdays article ‘Do you need to file a US Tax Return? (For those living outside of the U.S.’, we progress to break down the filing and paying aspects of US tax as a US expat or resident Alien.
April 15th, 2019
The upcoming 2018 us tax return, together with any tax owed, is due by April 15th, 2019.
June 15th, 2019
The IRS allows U.S. citizens and resident aliens an automatic 2-month extension on the US April 15thdeadline for filing and paying taxes. This brings the deadline, for the 2018 tax year, to June 15th, 2019 for US expats and resident aliens.
A statement must be included alongside your tax return, which clarifies why you qualified for the extension.
October 15th, 2019
Resident aliens and US Expats are also able to apply for a 6-month extension, bringing the deadline for filing to October 15th, 2019. This does not apply to paying the tax due.
In order to apply for the 6-month extension you must fill out a Form 4868.
There is a discretionary period of 2-months for taxpayers overseas, bringing the absolute final filing date to December 15th, 2019. In order to do this you must send the I.R.S a letter justifying why you require the extension.
